Palm oil is the second largest source of vegetable oil in the world. It is derived from the palm fruit in tropical countries. It is the third most widely traded oil after soybean and rapeseed oil. Palm oil is used in so many products including margarine, baked goods (such as biscuits, bread, cakes, pastries), ice cream, convenience foods, confectionery, filled milk and as cocoa-butter substitute but is also used in products such as candles, soap and cosmetics. The other usage area of palm oil is bio-fuels production.
90% of palm oil production is found in Indonesia and Malaysia. Smaller but still significant palm oil exporters to EU are Honduras, Colombia and Guatemala. Please find below the largest palm oil exporter and importer countries in the world.
Liquatrans has developed a flexitank specifically for palm oil. The features of the flexitank, which is a version of H-Flex, that makes it convenient for palm oil are as follows:
  • Palm oil is solid until 35 C. Therefore needs heating for discharge at destination. The integrated heating system of the flexitank makes it possible to heat the palm oil for discharge without the need for heater pad (thus saving the cost of heater pad) and up to 7 times faster than conventional flexitanks with heater pads.
  • The specific gravity of palm oil is between 0.90-0.95 depending on the type. 26,000 litre capacity of the flexitank makes it possible to transport 2,000 litres more per container creating a savings of 8% on overall freight cost.
  • Sedimentation is a feature of palm oil. In order to discharge the palm oil in the flexitank with minimum residue, a second port is installed where a spike can be inserted to enable circulation. This process both stirs up the cargo to eliminate settling and also makes the heating faster.
Liquatrans is able to provide import service for palm oil from Malaysia, Indonesia, Guatemala, and Colombia. Liquatrans  partner offices in Europe are ready to assist their clients for their palm oil imports out of those countries through the network of Liquatrans.
